When I had a house on Sparkleberry Lane, I’d sit for hours with these beautiful tall Cedars on our land. The smell, their contours, and how they feel old and a little scrappy. I discovered they’re dying rapidly, and that made them even more precious. It’s a funny thing, to get to “own” a piece of the Earth. We become stewards, we learn to work with the land.
My friend Godi who is an incredible human, a tribal chief’s son from Africa. A man who really knows who he is, and is full of joy – look out for his extraordinary story on my Come to Center Podcast soon), took me for a walk around the sanctuary he is building- nature, art, wood shop, ceremony…the things that make Life beautiful.
As we walked his land, this Junpier branch called to me. I swear I heard it! I learned what we call Cedars are actually Junipers. And they are really something when they bloom, bear fruit. The blues and purples and the dustiness of their coats…I loved feeling them as I painted. They make gin out of these too, and that’s a favourite flavor.
I’ve been painting berries by the fire this winter, and this one is admittedly technically a lot more demanding- so I was even happier to see it come alive as it did. This one took a while to complete…each of those needles, oh my. But I got so much joy out of it!
My Dad thought it was a photograph, and my Mother thought it was real.
But, they’re my parents.
What do you think?

These were my favourite part to paint..

And I really love the way the bark came out.
